Exactly a year ago today I was diagnosed with a brain tumour the size of a golf ball, after 3 seizures in 3 years. In July I had a 10 hour awake surgery with 2 specialist surgeons in London. The operation was a success but because of the location of the tumour I was left paralysed down my right side and unable to speak for 8 days. After 12 days in hospital I was able to walk out without support. After speaking French, ordering tea & coffee (I hate both) and getting confused what thumbs up meant my speech slowly came back. Unfortunately from March to July the tumour became cancerous so had to undergo radiotherapy and chemotherapy of which I have one more chemo cycle. Being so active I was back on my bike and turbo trainer at home – which I bought in preparation for rehab – the day after arriving home from hospital. I had to be helped on and off but I was motivated to get back to full activities. I’m now able to say I’m back doing all the sports and training I was doing before. I’m going to be doing Adrenaline Rush 10km in London in May, then the Great North Run half marathon in September this year. I’m raising money for the ward I stayed on after surgery – Molly Lane Fox and Macmillan cancer support. Even if it’s a pound or dollar it all adds up.
